Vietnam - A Tale of two tours isn't your normal helicopter pilots memoirs of the conflict. A lot of the book is dedicated to imparting knowledge about the different helicopters and their roles, the areas James Mooney operated in, perspectives on the conflict at a higher level rather than just from the authors standpoint. This adds a lot more context to the book and makes some of the things the author discusses easier to understand.Although James Mooney flew two tours, most of the book is dedicated to his first tour. The second tour being shorter as it happened during the time that America was actually pulling out of Vietnam. James Mooney possibly has the dubious distinction of being the last helicopter pilot shot down in Vietnam.Dotted throughout the book (this is the ebook version I'm reviewing) are lots of little thumbnail pictures (that you can enlarge but they don't scale very well) which add nicely to the narrative.Although the author does give you details about specific flights that happened during his tour, its not really the edge of the seat narrative that you find in the likes of "Gunship Pilot" or "Low Level Hell". Mr. Mooney conveys his flight stories in more of a matter of fact way rather than taking you inside the helicopter with him and giving you a first person perspective like the books mentioned above. This doesn't detract from the book however and it is still a good read however I would have liked to have seen more memories/stories of actual flights.
This is one of the finest books about the Vietnam War from a helicopter pilot point of view or Vietnam Vets point of view that I read in a very, very long time it reads like a guy telling War Stories over drinks and he completely captivates you from start to finish of his two combat tours in Vietnam. The Good the Bad and the Ugly you will not be disappointed in purchasing this book!! I know I wasn't!!
This book gives a sense of what it must have been like for so many of our young men during those sad years of the Viet Nam war. Being that this was taken from this author's actual account makes it a very viable account of this experience.
The writer kept my interest throughout the book and since I served during part of the Vietnam War and my brother did three 13 month tours with the CB'S (Construction Battalion), I found it a very good read which answered many questions I had during and since!!! Now in my mid 70's Vietnam is still strong on my mind and probably will always be!
I began reading this book and found I could not put it down. I especially enjoyed the beginning where the author discusses what it takes to fly helicopters. This author takes readers through everything involved in flying military helicopters during wartime. My thanks to James Mooney for a fine book.
The best stories are the ones told by people who lived through the tale.This is a great book. Not just for what he saw but how he tells it.
Moody has done this pretty well. From training to flying to Nam to training to Nam and back. He’s an insightful guy and a good writer. A bit too much in the bars and brothals. Some good flying and tactics. The first half of the book is much more engaging than the second. Got to admire someone who put up with the amount of BS from the REMFs and survived. Hand salute for making it 22 years in the Army.
Anyone interested in what the boys/men did while flying under some really questionable leadership combined with the dangers of war, were truly hero's in my book! Thank you all for your service to country.
