For the topic involved it is rather hard to write, or rather fill, an entire book on how to wrap a piece of paper around a chunk of lead. As a consequence the author included a lot of filler. In a way the book is not written as a normal textbook would be but rather almost as a conversation between two people. I was expecting more of a technical discussion but instead, while the relevant information was there, it could have been parsed down to about 10 pages at most. There was other historical information that was missing that would have been nice to have and would have been more interesting rather than some of the content that was there and more to the topic at hand. So overall, you get the information you need, you also get a bunch of filler and some material that is only loosely related to the topic. So it gets the job done but it could have been better.
This is a convenient 6"x9" paperback of which the appearance belies the quality of the content. On first impression the paper back (cover) is too thin, almost fragile, and the paper yellowish and low quality, while the 45 odd b&w photographs were clearly not taken by a professional photographer. Once you dig into the 140 pages of text however, this book's quality becomes apparent. In Chapter 13 Mr. Matthews covers the casting, hardness and sizing of the bullet intended for paper patching and how it can be bumped up or swaged as need be. This is followed by suitable papers for patching, determining suitable patch dimensions and the actual application thereof to the bullet. The tools used are also discussed. He then covers a few topics which jacketed bullet shooters may find quite esoteric. These include bullet lubrication, waterproofing the patch as well as how to load a paper patched bullet. The booked is wrapped up by two chapters delving into the theory underlying paper patches.One reviewer mentioned that the book did not provide enough detail on how to apply a patch. In my respectful view this book does. You just have to read it cover to cover once. I learnt a lot from this book and consider it money well spent. My only criticism of it is that it is a book that will be used a lot initially by a novice paper patching shooter and, being a paperback, I would have liked it more durable. The solution is of course to buy two right from the outset.Information wise it is an excellent and recommended publication.
this book was suggested in several places on a casters site, and it's a nice to have, but was actually limited in the level of detail it provides on paper patching. It would benefit with more pictures, and also with more information on patching smaller and more modern calibers.Still, it's an entertaining read.
I bought this book as an aid to my learning how to paper patch cast lead bullets. The book was interesting to read and did have some instruction on the topic. It also had illustrations that were helpful. However it did not address trouble shooting the many problems that pop up, to any degree. Had it been more helpful in that area I would have given it a 5 star rating.

This book has given me the confidence to begin making paper patched bullets. It thoroughly explained how determine correct bullet diameter and select the right paper thickness and bullet sizing dies. The diagrammed plans for modifying a paper cutter.to cut the patches has been very helpful.
This book does provide the info you're looking for but it's kind of mixed up. The history of the paper jacket is interesting and the author's personal experiences are also valuable but the book is arranged more like a novel than a reference book.
