From School Library Journal

Gr 4–6—Joseph, a boy with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and anxiety, joins his school's cross-country team and finds his footing. On the first day of school, he meets Heather, a new student, when she puts the school bully, a constant source of misery in Joseph's life, in his place. Joseph is convinced to join the cross-country team by a teacher and is surprised to discover Heather is also on the team. While running does not come easily, Joseph develops a connection to Heather, who also feels isolated. Their unlikely friendship blossoms as Joseph attempts not to win but to run his "PR" (personal record). The characters in Asher's debut novel are likable and approachable, and the story is absorbing and moves quickly. Readers will root for Joseph and his new teammates. The protagonist's worries seem typical for a kid his age, though he has a lot more of them than most children. However, Joseph's diagnoses are problematic. He specifically says he has ADD but not attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but the medical community currently categorizes ADD as a form of ADHD. Joseph also explains that his school psychologist diagnoses him with "anticipatory anxiety." In real life, a trained psychologist would offer Joseph strategies or tools to manage his anxiety, but save for one misunderstood instruction to keep a "worry list," none are mentioned in the text. Readers familiar with the challenges of living with ADD or anxiety disorders are likely to find Joseph's ability to overcome his issues unrealistic. VERDICT An engaging novel with an oversimplified portrayal of mental illness.—Mary Kuehner, Arapahoe Library District, CO

Review

"Joseph's first-person voice is fresh and authentic, and his character arc is immensely satisfying." (Kirkus)"The characters in Asher’s debut novel are likable and approachable, and the story is absorbing and moves quickly. Readers will root for Joseph and his new teammates." (School Library Journal)"They come to count on each other as they race for the same goal: doing their personal best...natural-sounding narrative with a good amount of humor." (The Horn Book)"An entertaining mix of events, conversations, anxieties, and reflections, Joseph’s first-person narrative engages readers on page one and never lets up...Justice is sweet when bullies get their comeuppance in this rewarding first novel." (Booklist)"Asher is honest about the ways in which Joseph’s condition sometimes affects his performance at school, but she’s also attentive to how his sensitivities enable him to experience his environment—the feel of the squishy new track surface, the air rushing past him when he runs, the colors of the woods along the course." (Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)

What a terrific book this is. I loved the characters and I loved the writing. The book's funny and touching and, with the author's light touch, I got to learn about running. I wonder if Diana Harmon Asher has more stories to tell about Joseph, Heather et al. I would definitely want to read them...or any other book she writes.

This book made me laugh out loud and tear-up as the author perfectly captures how it feels when you are lonely, picked-on, or just different. The main plot focuses on how a boy with ADD and the new, tall girl in school help each other overcome. The dialogue sounds like real middle schoolers and the inner monologue sounds like a bright, self-aware boy with a sense of humor about what he thinks is his place in the world. A subplot about his grandfather touchingly shows that feelings of loneliness do not stop in middle school. I read this to my 10 year old, and we both loved it.

I am sure middle-aged men are not the target audience for the book but I just loved it. The lead, Joseph, is a pre-teen with some learning challenges trying to get through 7th grade and begin to find his place in the world. This is a funny (I found myself laughing out loud a number of times) and heart-warming story of how small unexpected triumphs can forever change a pre-teen's view of himself and the possibility for growth, courage and friendship. It doesn't sugar-coat or over-simplify the struggles that a kid with special educational issues faces trying to fit in (including avoiding the school bullies) or those of his friend, Heather, trying to understand her parents' complex relationship. Asher handles the issue in a caring and sensitive way. There is also a wonderful character in the grandfather of Joseph who plays a key role in his development. At the conclusion, I was sorry the book had to end although I was smiling ear to ear.

Side Tracked tells the story of a boy who finds his own sense of self worth through his experience as a cross country runner. On the way, he makes friends, learns to face his own fears and recognizes that what makes him different also makes him special. In truth, most of us are "different" in some way or other. But we don't necessarily find a way to be okay with that until late in life. Any young person reading this book may well be inspired to positively reflect on their own unique gifts with a more positive view of who they are and what they have to offer. And that makes this book pretty special.

Wonderful book! Beautifully and sensitively written with a great sense of humor. Delightful story of a young man who is trying to figure out his way in life : and discovers that running is something he can do. Lovely story of teen aged friendships and the power of finding your own way in a complicated world. I love this book. Highly recommended!

An outstanding book that speaks to middle schoolers on many levels. Deals honestly with learning challenges, girl empowerment and all the insecurities of those years. Also fast moving and funny!

What a great read - entertaining, easy-to-read, the story will make you laugh and cry... Loved every minute of it!

My twin 7th graders read and loved this book. They found the main character highly relatable and said it was one of their favorite books.
