John Brophy not only played professional minor league hockey for over 20 years, he is the second most winning coach in professional hockey history. "Broph" was noted as one of hockey's toughest defenseman, not only accumulating 3,822 penalty minutes (the equivalent of 63.7 games), but also accumulating a legend of wild antics while playing and coaching. Gregg has interviewed "Broph" himself, many teammates, opponents, officials and others that have "Broph" stories to tell. Many of us knew some of the stories, others are new and for others, Gregg gives us more behind the scenes background and outcomes. Gregg has gone to great lengths to understand "Broph's" background and his personal success' and failings. While Gregg is entertaining us with stories of the Broph, he has also done a wonderful job describing life in hockey's minor leagues. Particularly the old Eastern Hockey League (EHL) where "Broph" spent most of his playing career. As a teammate of John , I had the best time of my life in hockey being around him and other Duck players . This is the real story of a competitor who left everything on the ice every day he competed. This is about the great life John led from his birth to his final days . It's about old time hockey and is enjoyable from cover to cover .If you love the game you will enjoy this book as I hated to come to the end of the book realizing there was no more to enjoy . Now the author Gregg Inkpen deserves alot of credit by putting this writing together over more than 10 years of research . If you don't read this book you're missing out on one of the greatest times and life of John Brophy = WAYNE KITCHEN
Inkpen has a great talent to compose a picture of the gallant insanity that is the mind of John Brophy. It really doesn't matter if your a hockey fan or even a sports fan you will enjoy it, and constantly want to know where Brophy's story goes next. From what I can tell this is Inkpen's first book, but hopefully not his last. A great read.
This well researched, no punches pulled biography brings you from Brophy's childhood, through the savagery of the Eastern Hockey League up to his glory years coaching the old Hampton Roads Admirals of the East Coast Hockey League and beyond.With Brophy behind the bench, the Admirals took the Tidewater area of Virginia by storm, winning 3 ECHL championships in 11 seasons while providing Norfolk hockey fans with plenty of Brophy stories from both on and off the ice.I only knew of Brophy from his days coaching the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Hampton Roads Admirals. This book gave me much more insight into the life of the legendary tough guy. I highly recommend this book for any hockey fan.
Just finished this book, once started it was hard too put down. I saw John Brophy play in the old Eastern Hockey League back in the 60's, the league was full of colorful players but none more exciting or colorful than Broph. the book is a true gem the pictures alone are worth the price. Expertly written and researched by the author Greg Inkpen, if you love hockey this book is a must have.
Some great reading. Any fan of John Brophy or minor league hockey in general will simply fall in love with this book.Fantastic memories, reading that will put you in the seats. Great detail. Was waiting a long time for this book to be published and the wait was well worth it. I certainly recommend Broph
Excellent read. Clearly researched in depth. Gives a great perspective regarding hockey in Canada and the US. Mr. Inkpen has written a classic which is a must read for any fan of hockey. Gonna buy serval more for holiday gifts.
