The environments depicted here are the antithesis of the modern preference for minimalism, marble surfaces, and professionally-decorated rooms, instead resembling homes that your parents and grandparents might have inhabited. "The Maverick Soul" was conceived, written, and published In England, which, far more than the United States, tolerates and indeed celebrates creative free spirits whom the British are wont to refer to as "eccentrics."To some degree, especially when its photographs focus on small portions of rooms, this book calls to mind the popular "It's the Little Things," while full-room shots are more reminiscent of the recently-published "Haute Bohemians." However, here the decors in "The Maverick Soul" are less studied and polished. These homes and the essays that celebrate the eccentrics who populate the book will inspire and affirm those in your life who are blessed with an exceptional quotient of curiosity and originality.
What a great book. I love seeing peoples spaces that are created organically, as opposed to being put together by a designer. You really get a great sense of people by seeing the surrounding they create for themselves. It is a very eclectic mix of environments. Beautifully photographed. If anyone has recommendations for similar books or magazines, I would love to hear them.

Thank you beyond what words can convey for liberating the last lurking fear of not being like others since I bring home twigs,rocks,broken bits of almost anything that has that wabi-sabi effet of age and worn beauty. Plus there is the unexpected bonus of just what an extraordinary writer Watts is,highly original and clearly blazingly intelligent.Just ordered another one so can underline passages of her writing,descriptions to muse over.Live long,be well,thank you so much Ms. Watts.And for those who don't get it,please move along.
I am in love with this book. It is inspiring to read about so many creative people who place intelligence, productivity and their own brand of innovation far, far ahead of commonplace lifestyles. This book is always on my coffee table, where I keep dozens of books which motivate, influence and stir me to utilize my own creativity. I highly recommend it.
This might be one of my all time favorite books featuring eccentric and bohemian interiors of eccentric and bohemian individuals. This one is also great because it features folks I've not seen in similar style books before and has a great write up on each individual. I absolutely recommend! AAAAAAA+++++++
First, I would say that I don't consider this to be a "decorating" book. I think that's why some of the "1 star" reviewers were disappointed. This is a book of poignant mini biographies of people who have lived well and creatively. Some through tough times. These mini bios are illustrated with beautifully composed photographs of their surroundings which have sprung from their lives. This is a book to linger with. Read about one or two people at a time. Or just look at the pictures. Any one of these people are probably worthy of a whole book. Thank you to the authors for this collection of gems.
I usually like to test-drive books like this from the library to see if I want to buy them. Unfortunately, this title wasn't available so I sucked it up and bought it. It wasn't cheap and there weren't any used copies that much cheaper than buying it new. It arrived yesterday via Prime and honestly, I have never been so disappointed with a decorating book in this genre! Typically, I can find at least one or two things that are inspiring in a book such as this, but all I could think as I flipped through the pages was that it was making my own interior design and displayed collections look pretty damn fantastic in comparison. So if you think you could be verging on the too cluttered look/hoarder territory within your own home, this book should quickly reassure you that you have a long, long way to go.Myself, I love eccentric and quirky interior design and I wholeheartedly subscribe to the "if you love it, have it/buy it/show it" philosophy. But it's also a very fine line and a slippery-slope into junk shop territory. Not everyone can pull off the eccentric, quirky, high/low design aesthetic Lorraine Kirke can (and "Would You Like To See The House?" is a favorite book).I was really disheartened by this book in general. Maybe if you are fans of the people featured, perhaps you'll appreciate it. Or maybe you will suddenly wish you didn't see your idols homes and how they live. For me, it's more of a "I can't unsee it now" experience that I will forever associate with the more well-known people in the book. And as this book is too big, heavy and not worth the cost and trouble to return, I'll either donate it to my local library or hold on to it until I meet the right person to gift it to in the future.
So refreshing! Away from all those uninteresting stylist shaped interiors, that seem all the same and lifeless and very often cold.Here is love and imperfection, an eye for the unexpected and detailed aspects of our world.
