Since 2009, she has been serving, writing about, and teaching her family's vegetarian recipes from India with a slant on seasonality and local ingredients. Chitra writes the popular recipe blog The ABCDs of Cooking, teaches vegetarian Indian cooking classes at Brooklyn Kitchen, Brooklyn Brainery, and Whole Foods, and hosts pop-up dinners throughout New York City with creative Indian-inspired menus. I usually like to come up with a fancy/ alliterative title, but the title of this book really says it all. Vibrant India by Chitra Agrawal is pretty amazing. The first thing I noticed about this book (other than the color of the foods) is that the ingredients are a little different than what I associate with Indian food. I know India is a subcontinent and so expansive, but I think all the Indian restaurants in my area are Norther Indian, and this cookbook is Southern Indian so I am very excited.The book has an excellent introduction area. Assuming you may not be familiar, the author does a great job explaining. There's a little history about her family, a section on Techniques and even tips on how to do specific things that may be different from normal cooking. The spice pantry descriptions are pretty excellent. The appearance, flavor, and even preparation of each spice is covered in great detail. I love this idea because it gives me a better idea of how the flavors combine and what I should be looking for. Preferred brands are even listed which I find very helpful.The recipes are fun as well. Although the recipes are all vegetarian, I almost didn't notice. With options like "best yogurt raita", "lime dill rice with pistachios", or "vangi baath roasted brussel sprouts and cauliflower" you can hear the flavor. I am very excited about making the brussel sprouts and cauliflower dish because these are two of my favorite summer sides. Put them together and flavor them? Yes please! Overall this is a welcome addition to my cookbook rack and I can't wait to pull all the information together to really get started.

This cookbook is beautiful! I was so excited to purchase it when it came out the other week. My husband and I eat a primarily vegetarian diet at home, and this cookbook is filled with new and interesting veggie recipes. I have always enjoyed eating Indian food out, but as the author clarifies in the introduction, most of the Indian restaurants in the US feature the cuisine of Northern India. While I love all those rich curries and dishes, the Southern Indian recipes in this cookbook feature meals that are lighter, healthier, and full of fresh ingredients. So far, we have tried the roasted brussels sprouts and cauliflower dish, and a few of the soup recipes, and all have been delicious. Normally, I'm not a total cookbook guru--I typically make up my own recipes, look up stuff online, or reference the Joy of Cooking, but I love looking through this cookbook to get new ideas. I also appreciate how the author shared her personal family history and cultural context of this type of food--it gave me a deeper understanding of the ingredients and cuisine. I am also a sucker for how things look aesthetically, and I love that way this book is set-up, including the beautiful illustrations and photos that intersperse the recipes. I did have to pay a visit to an Indian market to stock up on some of the spices and other ingredients needed for many of the recipes, but now that I have them on-hand, I mostly just have to get the fresh vegetables when I want to cook something from this book. I would definitely recommend this cookbook to anyone who is interested in healthy, interesting recipes, or just needs some new flavors to get out of a food rut!

This is a unique and thoughtful compilation of South Indian vegetarian home cooking -- the kind I grew up with but never quite learned to cook. While my dear mom has passed away and taking her amazing cooking talent with her, Chitra Agrawal has lovingly captured the recipes that evoke that authentic "home" taste, but often with a fusion twist that make them even more exquisite. And I say this as someone who does not typically like to mess with old school recipes -- I like traditional foods, passed on through generations. But these are definitely an upgrade - fresh, local, colorful, flavorful and fun!great to buy as gifts for that vegan, gluten free, foodie cousin who is always onto the next big thing!

I am from the same region of India as the author and learnt most of my cooking watching my mother. However, never really understood the technicalities of cooking the recipes such as the amounts to add and the sequence of steps in seasoning etc. Chitra makes my childhood recipes come to life with her easy to understand and well tested recipes. I love that she uses the traditional names I grew up with and that she has some of the fundamental masala or spice powder recipes as well. I have been obsessed with her cookbook and made many of the recipes, all of which have been delicious. I am buying this book for my friends as well. Must buy if you love Indian food and want to try South Indian cooking.

I made the dosa and the potato filling. I recommend using a vitamix for the dosa. directions were accurate and the food came out perfectly. Just like a restaurant. I wouldn't augment the recipe at all. I think she offers useful tips too. In case you live somewhere cooler, use the microwave as a place to create a humid environment, I have a large selection of Indian books and this one will stay on the shelf as a go to.

This is a beautiful cookbook prefaced by some interesting backstory about the author and her parents' life.When I first perused it I felt like there weren't a lot of recipes, but once I started trying recipes, to my surprise my husband liked every single one. Usually my success rate with new recipes is about 30%, so I am really getting a lot of bang for my buck here. This is my first South Indian cookbook, I have about half a dozen North Indian cookbooks. If you cook a lot of North Indian food (what you would find in most Indian restaurants in the US), then if you get this book you will need a lot of new spices, as the spices they use down South seem to be pretty different than in the North for the most part. But for us it has been totally worth it. My new favorite Indian cookbook!

This cookbook has become my favorite. Everything is so delicious and not complicated. Some of the ingredients are somewhat different but I found everything I needed. It is worth seeking out the ingredients as the end result is superb.
